At Brickbooks and Payroll, we understand that timely and accurate year-end accounts are crucial for both sole traders and companies. That’s why we work on your accounts throughout the year, ensuring every transaction is properly recorded and reconciled well before year-end.
Construction Company Accounts
Most accountants send you a set of accounts and a tax bill several months after your year end, and by then there is nothing anyone can do about either.
We would rather have the conversation while it still changes something.
The decision you have already made is the one we cannot help with
The van bought in the wrong month. The equipment ordered three weeks after the year end instead of three weeks before. The dividend taken without checking what it does to your personal tax. The pension contribution nobody mentioned.
These come up constantly, and almost always after the fact. Once your year end has passed, the position is fixed. We can present it accurately and claim everything you are entitled to, but we cannot change what happened.
That is why we hold a tax planning session before your year end, while there is still time to act. It is the single most valuable meeting we do.
Micro entity accounts, which is most of you
Around 95 per cent of the limited companies we look after file under FRS 105, the micro entity standard. If your company is small enough to qualify, the accounts filed at Companies House are short: a balance sheet with a few notes, and no profit and loss account on public record. Your competitors and your customers cannot see what you turned over or what you made.
That is a genuine advantage in a sector where people talk. It is also a reason to make sure you are actually filing under the right standard, because the thresholds have moved and some companies are filing more than they need to.
HMRC still receives full accounts and a corporation tax computation. It is only the public filing that is abbreviated.
What we do
- Statutory accounts prepared and filed at Companies House
- Corporation tax computation and CT600 filed with HMRC
- Confirmation statement
- Director’s personal tax return, included in your package
- A post year end meeting to go through the figures with you
- Capital allowances reviewed properly, including on vans, plant and tools
- Directors’ loan accounts checked before they become a problem rather than after
- CIS suffered reconciled so nothing is left sitting with HMRC
How it works
We work on monthly subscriptions rather than a bill that lands once a year. You choose how much contact you want and pay for that, and the accounts and tax returns come free once you have been with us twelve months.
The practical effect is that you can pick up the phone in September rather than waiting until March, which is precisely when the useful conversations happen.
Everything is done remotely and meetings are online, which keeps the cost down and means we can work with you wherever your sites are.
What we need from you
Your bookkeeping records, bank statements, and details of anything unusual that happened during the year. If we do your bookkeeping already, we have most of it.
Tell us about big decisions before you make them, not after. A five minute phone call in advance is worth more than an hour of explaining afterwards.
Common questions
When are my accounts due? Nine months after your year end for Companies House, and the corporation tax is payable nine months and a day after. The tax return itself is due twelve months after.
Do you file the accounts for me? Yes, at Companies House and with HMRC, once you have approved them.
Is my personal tax return extra? No, it is included in your package.
Can you take over from my current accountant? Yes. We write to them for the handover information and deal with it from there.
What if my records are a mess? Tell us honestly. Building records from scratch is chargeable work, so we would rather price it up front than surprise you.
